The provisions of new law cash access law in Ireland are inadequate - an up to 20 kilometre round trip to get cash is NOT convenient access to cash.
However, where it is vastly better than the nonsense inflicted on the British public by HM Treasury is that the law actually mentions ATMs!
In a now infamous statement on “reasonable” cash access issued in 2023 by HM Treasury, there was no mention at all of ATMs, even though such machines deliver over 90% of the cash used by the British public!
Not mentioning ATMs - the only way of providing truly convenient 24/7 cash access - was of course deliberate and reflects the malign influence the banks have over HM Treasury. Why would banks want ATM mentioned, when they are ripping out ATMs every day at the same time as they destroy their branch networks?
7 ATMs HAVE BEEN RIPPED OUT EVERY DAY SINCE 1 JANUARY 2018.
2018 was the year the banks forced the board of LINK to weaponise payments to independent ATM operators, to ensure those operators could not replace the ATMs the banks were ripping out- the ATMs the British public NEED and WANT in THEIR communities.
HM Treasury not mentioning ATMs in 2023 has also allowed them to ignore the need to establish a viable economic model for the supply of cash to the British public via ALL channels.
HM Treasury, Financial Conduct Authority and Payment Systems Regulator all know what is required to make cash supply viable.
WE HAVE TOLD THEM.
