There is an ongoing campaign to stigmatise cash and those who use it. A charity participating in this campaign is Crimestoppers Trust
They highlight the “dangers” of cash-only businesses and ask the public to look out for “individuals displaying unexplained wealth or expensive lifestyles” and using “high-value bank notes”.
In fact, the UK does not have any “high-value banknotes”.
A £50 banknote - which is the Bank of England highest denomination - is the LOWEST value highest denomination banknote in any Westerm Economy.
BUT, according to Crimestoppers, don’t be seen using one -or even several £20 notes - without having an explanation for this “wealth”, which may be seen as contributing to your “expensive lifestyle”.
The chair of “crimestoppers” is Billionaire Michael Ashcroft. You can read about him here, if you have the inclination:
The PCA doesn’t know if any of Michael’s substantial wealth is “unexplained” and wouldn’t have the cheek to ask him.
BUT what we DO know is that over 40 million UK citizens continue to regularly use cash and 19 million of those members of the British public use their cash to budget their finances, so that they do not slip into debt.
It’s probably some time since Michael Ashcroft had to worry about slipping into debt….
One thing is certain.
Stigmatising cash use and cash acceptance is NOT in the Public Interest and will be STOPPED in 2026.
