This article in The Times is meant to be mildly amusing.
It is simply rather patronising.
Frankly, it is boring to have such commentators supposedly “sympathising” with those who need or want to use cash, as if such people are somehow outliers.
Whatever such commentators think, say or write, the UK is NEVER going to be “cashless”, whether or not businesses, banks or the government want that to happen.
Why?
BECAUSE THE MAJORITY CANNOT BE “OUTLIERS” - AND A CLEAR MAJORITY OF THE BRITISH PUBLIC HAVE MADE IT CLEAR THAT THEY REJECT “CASHLESS”.
That’s good enough for us.
