The existing process Banking Hub location selection process, which has failed to provide Banking Hubs in Barrhead and Neilson, is not working to best serve the Public Interest. As the Payment Choice Alliance has made clear for sometime, there should be an automatic provision of a Banking Hub, with a 24/7 ATM, automated cash deposit facilities and other in-person financial services, in every UK community with between 5000 and 35,000 residents. Few communities in this population range have bank branches currently - and that number is reducing every month.
The automatic provision of Banking Hubs would replace the current assessments done by LINK Scheme Ltd, which seem about to lead to recommendations for around 250 Banking Hubs. No doubt by coincidence, that number matches the promise made by Cash Access UK to deliver 250 by the end of 2025.
Link and Cash Access UK are both not-for-profits, basically funded by the major UK banks. Matching aspirations would not be a surprise.
The British public deserve better - they DESERVE 1200 plus properly equipped Banking Hubs.
The public - and local businesses - WILL use the Banking Hubs, providing they provide a comprehensive community touchpoint for a wide range of cash and other financial services. HM Treasury, the Financial Conduct Authority, the Bank of England and, indeed, the UK Government must surely understand the dynamics of this situation.Provide the number of properly equipped Banking Hubs required - 1200 MINIMUM- or face the anger of tens of millions of British citizens, the length and breadth of the country.
