The Payment Choice Alliance Calls For Changes To The Treasury Committee Recommendations On Cash Acceptance

The Treasury Committee has spent the last 6 months coming up with a Report issued this week that ignores the clear evidence that action is needed NOW, in 2025, to safeguard cash acceptance in the UK.

Instead, the Committee is sticking to the Labour Government’s misguided non-intervention policy. For The Treasury Committee to basically simply ask HM Treasury to report annually on how bad cash acceptance has become is patently unacceptable and clearly against the interests of the British public.

Every one of the countries neighbouring the UK have put the interests and wishes of the public first, introducing legal measures to oblige businesses to accept cash. The British government seems to believe that the British public are less deserving of the legal right to have their cash accepted.

On behalf of the 40 million members of the British public who are demanding the legal right to use their cash, when and where they choose, the Payment Choice Alliance considers the built-in delay set out by the Treasury Committee unacceptable and will be calling on the Committee to urgently review this stance.

Leading Conservative MP Sir John Hayes Supports Payment Choice!

Payment Choice Alliance

Our Chair Ron Delnevo was delighted to meet in Westminster last week with hugely experienced and charismatic Conservative MP Sir John Hayes. Sir John, who has proudly represented his South Holland and The Deepings constituency since its creation in 1997, is a massive supporter of cash and all aspects of payment choice.

Ron and Sir John spoke for around 90 minutes, covering every facet of cash acceptance, as well as community financial services provision. The Payment Choice Alliance is looking forward to working with Sir John as he demonstrates his support of cash in the months and years ahead. More news on this VERY soon!

The Payment Choice Alliance has commenced discussions with Englands Regions to ask them to make cash acceptance mandatory on a Regional basis. Click on the above link.

We are expecting a warm reception to this idea, with Manchester high up our lists of targets. Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, seems to be very strong on the need for cash acceptance. Can the Northern Powerhouse lead the way for the whole UK? Watch this space!

Take Action to Protect Cash

About Us

The Payment Choice Alliance, founded in 2014 and relaunched in 2023, is a campaigning organisation committed to ensuring the right of the British public to use cash is safeguarded by the passing of a Payment Choice Act.

The Act would give everyone in the UK the right to use their cash, when and where they choose.

The Payment Choice Alliance, which is run by committed volunteers, is also focused on ensuring every community in the UK has convenient cash withdrawal and deposit facilities. The provision of such facilities, along with the legal obligation of businesses to accept cash, will ensure cash remains a viable Payment Choice for the British public for as long as they want to use it.
