Council parking meters must take cash, says Gove.
It is excellent that Michael Gove has written to Local Councils informing them that parking meters must take cash.
However, in communicating this important message, the Government Minister sought to explain his stance by stating that cash is still “Legal Tender”.
Unfortunately, Legal Tender status does NOT mean that anyone is compelled to accept cash in payment for goods or services - such as parking meters.
That’s why the Payment Choice Alliance is asking the Government to bring in a Payment Choice Act that compels every business to accept cash.
That would make Michael Gove’s next letter to Local Councils much easier. He would simply tell them to stop breaking the law…
