Exciting April 2025 cash numbers from Post Office Ltd, especially in relation to counter services.
And we can provide a more detailed analysis, demonstrating just how important a role Post Offices play in UK cash circulation.
Let’s look at cash deposits first.
The year-on-year increase in cash deposit numbers was an impressive 5.3%.
The average value of cash deposits, personal and business, was £435, a very impressive 17.7% increase on 2024 levels.
Turning to withdrawals, the numbers were 10% up on 2024, with the average value £134, a 7% increase on the previous year and well above - 49% higher - the average LINK ATM cash withdrawal, which is currently around £90.
And, of course, some of those withdrawals were businesses getting change for their tills, with for many small businesses the Post Office being their only convenient local access to this service.
In total, Post Office counters issued cash at a level that was 15% of the value of LINK ATM withdrawals in April 2025.
This figure, of course, understates the importance of Post Offices in terms of supplying cash to the British public and businesses.
The reason?
Because, as well as counter services, Post Offices have ATMs.
Officially, there are 1400 Post Office Free-to-Use ATMs, provided via Post Office Ltd itself, around 4% of the total number in the UK.
However, thousands of additional ATMs are provided at Post Offices by independent ATM deployers. In total, it is likely that at least 10% of all Free-to-Use ATMs in the UK are located at Post Offices.
Adding ATM cash withdrawals to the cash provided over Post Office counters, it is likely that Post Offices now provide more than 20% of the total value of cash withdrawn in the UK each month.
More good news is that the number of Post Offices in the UK is increasing, with a 1% increase in 2024, taking the total number to 11,805.
All of the above underlines just how important it was for Post Office Ltd to agree a new contract with UK banks to provide banking services at those 11,800 Post Offices. The fact that this contract now runs until 2030 is great news for those who want to go on spending and accepting cash in the UK.
What is also vital is that Post Office Ltd is not sold off.
Post Offices are National Treasures - major assets- of the UK and must remain in public ownership. They provide thousands of communities with their only local Financial Services touchpoints.
“Privatisation” CANNOT be an option.
