Of course, everyone should keep some cash at home, if they can afford to do so. Systems failures are INEVITABLE.
Cash ALWAYS works, as a payment method, store of value and means of exchange. Most of the cash nominally in circulation in the UK is actually already used as a store of value - in fact, more than £50 Billion of the £80 Billion plus of banknotes issued by the Bank of England are not circulating at all. This cash is effectively permanently stored.
The Bank of England actually don’t know where the £50 Billion is - and nor should they. Cash affords privacy, which we should all be entitled to enjoy.
There are 30 million households in the UK. If every one had a £400 emergency cash store that would amount to only £12 Billion. Very easy for the Bank of England to manage in terms of the overall amount of cash issued in the UK.
As for HM Revenue & Customs, Daily Mirror readers needn’t worry. The tax police have absolutely zero interest in people who are keeping small amounts of cash at home.
The only pity is that, according to the Financial Conduct Authority, at least 6 million adults in the UK have no savings at all. So they can’t keep £400 cash at home - they haven’t got any….
