This headline in The Guardian misses the point.
Supporters of cash as a Payment Choice are NOT looking for any “crown” to be restored.
They simply want to be able to use their cash, when and where they choose.
It was Mastercard that announced their “War on Cash” in 2010. Supporters of cash did not reciprocate by declaring a “war” on cards- there are enough wars in the world, without joining in Mastercards silliness!
Coins more than 2500 years old exist.
Since then, the Public have, literally, treasured cash.
Many have thought over the centuries that cash would disappear.
Even John Shepherd-Barron, the Scot credited with inventing the ATM, thought his creation would be needed for only a few years because cash use would be extinguished. That was in 1967, before mankind landed on the Moon.
Yet, here we are in 2025, with cash use in the UK increasing for the third successive year. A shopkeeper is quoted in this article by Hannah Al-Othman as predicting that “cash will one day cease to exist”.
After 2500 years?
There is as much chance of that as Edinburgh Castle being knocked down to build a hotel.
Or reverse alchemists finding a way of converting gold into base metal. NONE.
