Treasury Committee Looks Likely To Support Payment Choice!

You can watch Ron giving evidence at The Treasury Committee hearing here.

It was a hugely positive session of the Treasury Committee on 4th December. Could this be a watershed moment - a tipping point, if you prefer - with MPs in Westminster throwing their weight behind supporting cash and Payments Choice? IT CERTAINLY FELT LIKE IT. The committee was expertly chaired by Dame Meg Hillier and all the MPs present made valuable and positive contributions.

Every aspect of cash was discussed and it came over strongly just how important cash is to so many millions of British citizens - and to the fabric of British society. So many things that the British public hold dear - choice; national and personal security; privacy; inclusion; freedom; and democracy itself - depend to a greater or lessor extent on there being a continuing option to choose to use cash.

All the witnesses appearing in front of the Committee had important points to make about the importance of cash in general and cash acceptance in particular. The MPs on the Committee were very supportive, with several noting that there is little point in having good cash access, if cash cannot be spent in shops and other businesses. There was a notable agreement between all involved that it was unacceptable for organisations benefiting from funding by national or local government to refuse cash payments form any member of the British public.

The committee reports in February 2025. Before then, even before Christmas, if you are in the constituency of one of the MPs on the Treasury Committee, please drop them an email telling them you hope the Committee recommends to the government that a law is passed making it compulsory for every business to accept cash payments.

Here are the MPs on the Treasury Committee, with their email addresses. You CAN make a BIG difference. Sensible MPs take a keen interest in the views of constituents!

Cash Use RISES For Second Year Running!

Shoppers increasingly using cash to budget - BBC News

Great report here from Kevin Peachey at the BBC, following up on the brilliant news from the British Retail Consortium that cash use has increased again in 2024! The British public have demonstrated yet again that they both WANT and NEED cash in their daily lives. A Payment Choice Act in 2025 will guarantee that they get what they want.

Cash CAN Provide An Escape Route For Those Suffering Domestic or Economic Abuse

Economic Abuse Survivors
Rely on Cash for Safety and Survival
independent .co.uk

Over 4 MILLION women in the UK live under the threat of abuse from a partner. That is a massive amount of misery for women. Clearly, cash cannot provide all the solutions for every woman suffering from abuse. However, there is no doubt that women who can covertly save a little cash may well have an escape route from their abusers.

Cash, unlike card and digital payments, cannot be tracked. Long may cash help women who need a path to safety and future security.

About Us

The Payment Choice Alliance, founded in 2014 and relaunched in 2023, is a campaigning organisation committed to ensuring the right of the British public to use cash is safeguarded by the passing of a Payment Choice Act.

The Act would give everyone in the UK the right to use their cash, when and where they choose.

The Payment Choice Alliance, which is run by committed volunteers, is also focused on ensuring every community in the UK has convenient cash withdrawal and deposit facilities. The provision of such facilities, along with the legal obligation of businesses to accept cash, will ensure cash remains a viable Payment Choice for the British public for as long as they want to use it.
