A Payment Choice Alliance Newsletter
Lynne Franks is a great believer in the continuing need for cash in the UK. In a conversation with Ron Delnevo, the PCA Chair, Lynne highlights the special importance of cash for women, whether as a method of carefully budgeting the family finances or, for several million women in the UK, as a route to escape abusive relationships. Watch the full interview here:
Conservative MP Sir John Hayes, who has proudly represented his South Holland and The Deepings constituency since its creation in 1997, is a massive supporter of cash and all aspects of payment choice.
The Payment Choice Alliance is delighted to report that Sir John will shortly be laying a bill before Parliament. The bill will, of course, cover the mandatory acceptance of cash by shops and other businesses. However, Sir John’s bill will also deal with cash access issues, including clauses concerning the provision of Banking Hubs in every community in the UK with a population of over 5000 residents. The only exceptions would be communities which still have at least one bank branch.
The Payment Choice Alliance fully supports Sir John Hayes bill and will seek to support its passing by writing to every MP, asking that all get behind this vitally important legislation.
71% of British adults told YouGov that they want legislation passed guaranteeing their cash is accepted. Sir John’s bill could be the kick start required to ensure the British public get what they want, for once!

The Payment Choice Alliance has sent the following strong message to Prime Minister Starmer, ‘Good to hear your plans, Sir Keir. But please do NOT forget to include cash - the only British owned payment method - in those plans.
Alistair Carns, your Veterans Minister, told the Payment Choice Alliance that cash is a vital component of National Security. We naturally agree. So to safeguard National Security, the security of the British public, we need to see further much enhanced cash access - including through 1200 plus Banking Hubs, all with 24/7 cash services.
The UK - the British public - also needs a law guaranteeing that cash is accepted by shops and other businesses.
Belgium, Denmark, France, Norway and Spain already have cash acceptance guaranteed by legal measures. Sweden - once the poster child of the ‘cashless’ brigade - and the Netherlands will follow their lead later this year.
Don’t let the UK fall behind where cash is concerned, Prime Minister. Properly legally safeguarding cash access and acceptance will ensure you don’t let the British public down.
To understand the strength of public feeling, just look at recent figures from YouGov, which revealed that 71% of British adults want a law put in place guaranteeing their cash - their £ - is accepted.
Please give the public what they want and need, now, in 2025.
The PCA needs all the active supporters we can get! So please tell your friends about YOUR support for the Payment Choice Alliance - and urge them to visit our website to register THEIR support!
THANK YOU.
The Payment Choice Alliance, founded in 2014 and relaunched in 2023, is a campaigning organisation committed to ensuring the right of the British public to use cash is safeguarded by the passing of a Payment Choice Act.
The Act would give everyone in the UK the right to use their cash, when and where they choose.
The Payment Choice Alliance, which is run by committed volunteers, is also focused on ensuring every community in the UK has convenient cash withdrawal and deposit facilities. The provision of such facilities, along with the legal obligation of businesses to accept cash, will ensure cash remains a viable Payment Choice for the British public for as long as they want to use it.
