A Payment Choice Alliance Newsletter
Great News! Neil Duncan-Jordan MP, who sponsored a Payment Choice Alliance MP ‘Drop-in’ event at the Westminster Parliament on 12th February, has now further supported cash and Payment Choice.
Neil has submitted an Early Day Motion - number 808 - calling for legislation to guarantee the British public’s cash is accepted for payments in the UK. The Motion is:
“That this House is concerned at the rapidly increasing trend for UK businesses, local authorities and leisure facilities, including those supported by taxpayer funding, to refuse to accept cash for payments; appreciates that this issue is of ever-increasing importance to the 16 million British adults who run their household budgets using cash, along with many of the 13 million UK citizens over 65 struggling to make ends-meet; recognises that the estimated 4 million people in the UK at risk in abusive relationships may use discretely saved cash as an escape route from abuse; deplores the fact that the imposition of app-only payment, including for car parking and other travel-related purchases, severely threatens the financial inclusion of the 8 million plus adults who do not own smart phones; notes that most of the UK’s European neighbours, including Belgium, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain, have already put cash acceptance legislation in place; understands that a recent survey by YouGov established that 71% of British adults want similar legal measures introduced in the UK; and calls on the Government to introduce legislation to require all businesses in the UK to accept cash for payment.”
What we would like all you PCA supporters to do is to email YOUR own MPs to urge them to sign Neil Duncan-Jordan’s Early Day Motion.
The More MPs that sign, the more likely the Government will be persuaded to act!
You may well know the name of your local MP, even if you don’t you can find out their name and contact details by using this link. We suggest you send an email along these lines, with your address included to prove you are a constituent:-
Dear (MP’s Name)
Good morning, I hope you are well.
I am one of our constituents and a keen user of cash, I support the Payment Choice Alliance, an organisation working to ensure every member of the British public has a legal right to use their cash to pay, when and where they choose.
Your fellow MP, Neil Duncan-Jordan, who represents Poole in Dorset, has tabled an Early Day Motion - number 808 - calling for legislation to give the British public - including myself - the right to spend our cash, when and where we choose.
The Prime Minister has stressed in the last week that the 1p and 2p coins will continue to be produced for the British public - but what’s the point of having those coins or any other British coin or banknote if businesses are allowed to ban their use?
Thank you in advance for supporting and signing the Early Day Motion - and helping to guarantee my right to use cash!
Kind regards

Please copy Sarah in on your email to your MP, sarah.j.nelson@paymentchoicealliance.org. With YOUR support, this can be a very successful Early Day Motion, which will help convince the Government that they must act to guarantee by law that cash is accepted by ALL businesses.
It was great that Neil Duncan-Jordan sponsored the Payment Choice Alliance MP Drop in on 12th February. Neil, the Labour MP for Poole, demonstrated his great support for cash and payment choice.
The Sincere thanks of the Payment Choice Alliance goes to Neil and his team for their support - and also to Sarah Nelson, Gareth Evans and Ron Delnevo from the Payment Choice Alliance Campaign Committee for doing so much to make the event a success.
It was wonderful to be back in the House of Commons again, meeting with MPs from all Parties - and from every part of the UK - who want to see the British public enjoy the legal right to spend their cash, when and where they choose.
The photograph above shows Ron Delnevo speaking with Sir John Hayes CBE, the charismatic Conservative MP for South Holland and The Deepings. Sir John is a huge supporter and user of cash!
A selection of interviews and photographs from the event will soon be up on the Payment Choice Alliance website and social media channels.
It was good to hear first-hand from MPs, from around the UK and from every major party, who so clearly understand the issues and are determined to ensure their constituents continue to be able to both access cash and have their cash accepted.
With so much support in Westminster, the Payment Choice Alliance is confident that the UK Government will implement during 2025 the appropriate legal measures to guarantee the British public get the Payment Choice they want and deserve!
As you may well remember, our Chair Ron Delnevo appeared before the Treasury Committee in December.
Every aspect of cash was discussed and it came over strongly just how important cash is to so many millions of British citizens - and to the fabric of British society.
So many things that the British public hold dear - choice; national and personal security; privacy; inclusion; freedom; and democracy itself - depend to a greater or lessor extent on there being a continuing option to choose to use cash.
All of the MPs on the Committee seemed to be strong supporters of cash and payment choice. Since December, the Payment Choice Alliance has been supplying the Treasury Committee with more information that demonstrates just how vital it is that a Payment Choice Act is passed in the UK in 2025.
The Committee is now expected to report in March. Let’s hope their report strongly points the British Government towards introducing legislation to guarantee cash acceptance this year!
More good coverage of important issues from The Guardian, this time with Rupert Jones producing a first-class analysis of the risk posed to financial and societal inclusion by the increasing domination of smart phones and apps. The Payment Choice Alliance was delighted to contribute on this vital matter, including via supporter Michael . True Payment Choice means being able to use cash, cards and apps, when and where you choose - not being dictated to by businesses imposing their will on the British public.
And Payment choice is what we - ALL OF US - are going to get in the UK, very soon.
The PCA needs all the active supporters we can get! So please tell your friends about YOUR support for the Payment Choice Alliance - and urge them to visit our website to register THEIR support!
THANK YOU.
The Payment Choice Alliance, founded in 2014 and relaunched in 2023, is a campaigning organisation committed to ensuring the right of the British public to use cash is safeguarded by the passing of a Payment Choice Act.
The Act would give everyone in the UK the right to use their cash, when and where they choose.
The Payment Choice Alliance, which is run by committed volunteers, is also focused on ensuring every community in the UK has convenient cash withdrawal and deposit facilities. The provision of such facilities, along with the legal obligation of businesses to accept cash, will ensure cash remains a viable Payment Choice for the British public for as long as they want to use it.
