A quote from this Daily Mirror article:
“However, Full Fact clarifies that legally, shops have the right to refuse cash payments, if they choose to do so.”
Correct.
Which is why, as also reported in the article, the Payment Choice Alliance is calling for new UK legislation obliging shops and other businesses to accept the publics cash.
This would give the British public the same guarantee of cash acceptance as already enjoyed by the public in, for example, Belgium, Denmark, France, Norway and Spain.
One other point.
Tesco and Sainsbury's ( where ATMs are operated by Note Machine ) continue to be brilliant for both cash access AND acceptance.
On a specific matter mentioned in the article, Tesco reviewed last years decision that a small number of cafes would be card-only and have moved back to accepting cash in those locations.
Those businesses which HAVE imposed “cashless” - such as Zizzi , itsu , Bread Holdings ( the parent of Gail’s), GREENWICH LEISURE ( trading as “Better ”) and Fusion Lifestyle - could learn a lot from the likes of Tesco, a company that did not become hugely successful by turning away customers who want to pay using cash!
If businesses truly care about their customers, they accept cash. It really IS as simply as that.
The British public have made clear they don’t want “cashless”.
It’s time ALL businesses honoured the publics wishes, rather than waiting for the UK Payment Choice legislation that will compel them to do so.
