Good to see the Treasury Committee out and about, seeing for themselves the importance of cash and Payment Choice.
When did HM Treasury itself last bother to genuinely consult with the public and small traders in the streets and in the markets of the UK?
NEVER.
Some of the traders speaking to the Treasury Committee in Darlington reported that 90% of their sales continue to be in cash - but this quote from a florist goes to the essence of the issue:
“…for us it's just about flexibility, offering the customer a choice."
C-H-O-I-C-E
That’s what over 80% of their British public told the LINK ATM Scheme they wanted in a survey conducted in August 2024; they want the option - the C-H-O-I-C-E - to pay using their cash.
Everywhere you look around our European neighbours, that C-H-O-I-C-E for the public is enshrined in law, with the Netherlands the latest to join the list of countries to acknowledge that cash acceptance cannot be left to the whim of individual businesses.
The Treasury Committee seems likely to ask the UK Government to give the British public the same right to use their cash as already enjoyed by so many other Europeans!
