UK Charities Call For Cash Acceptance Legislation!

Posted on: 03/03/2025

Wonderful to see charities like Disability Rights UK (DRUK) and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) - and the people they support - speaking out to demand the UK Government introduces legislation to compel businesses to accept cash.

There are 16 million people in the UK with some form of disability, so this is definitely not a fringe issue.

The British public - including the 16 million living with disability - are being badly let down, with most of our neighbours, including Belgium, Denmark, France, Norway and Spain, already giving their citizens the legal right to use their cash, when and where they choose.

This statement from HM Treasury, responding to the charities call for action, is absolutely ludicrous:

“Individual businesses can decide which payment methods they accept, but new rules introduced by the Financial Conduct Authority aim to ensure that businesses can deposit cash, helping those who want to keep accepting it."

The Labour Party was surely not put into power to give the whims of individual businesses priority over the needs and wishes of the British public?

Time for this Government to recognise the overwhelming wish of the British public to always have the option to use cash; time to pass a Payment Choice Act in 2025!
