Many Communities Starved Of Cash Access!

Posted on: 17/03/2025

A lady in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders saying she had to travel 10 miles to get cash -a twenty mile round trip.

A shopkeeper determined not to be forced to accept cards, even though his customers are struggling to access cash.

Only one 24/7 ATM servicing the needs of the town - and, hardly surprisingly, it often runs out of cash.

All the towns bank branches and main post office have been closed.

So where is the Banking Hub, Cash Access UK?

Well done to the BBC Scotland for highlighting this story, following on from the work the Payment Choice Alliance was doing in the West of Scotland all last week, exposing the lack of access to cash and local financial services in general.

John Lamont MP, the MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, is seeing his constituents suffer the same fate as those of Brendan O'Hara MP for Argyll, Bute and Kintyre. Meantime, there were PR stories all last week about “cash use collapsing as the UK heads towards “cashless”.

Not “heads” - BEING PUSHED.

Perhaps now Emma Reynolds, the Economic Secretary at HM Treasury, will recognise the reality of cash access and cash acceptance in the UK.

BOTH ARE NOWHERE NEAR GOOD ENOUGH TO SATISFY THE LEGITIMATE DEMANDS OF THE BRITISH PUBLIC.

The Treasury Committee, chaired by The Labour Party MP Meg Hillier, is shortly going to publish their report and recommendations on cash acceptance. It is vital that this report fully exposes all the current issues and takes the lead in pushing hard for the solutions to be implemented.

The Payment Choice Alliance has identified exactly what solutions need to be implemented.

The British public need to see those solutions implemented!
