The amount of cash dispensed by ATMs in the UK on 22 December 2023 was £460 million.
This is the busiest day at UK cash machines since before the pandemic, when £471 million was withdrawn on 28 February 2020.
And when one adds the extra £10 million withdrawn over Post Office counters on 22 December, demand for cash was identical to that February 2020 pre pandemic level.
So despite the best efforts of the anti-cash brigade, the British public continue to want a lot of cash.
The record month for cash dispensed by ATMs was back in December 2017, when £760m was withdrawn in one day.
Oddly, that was the same month that LINK ATM Network announced that there were “too many” ATMs in the UK.
So the month when UK ATMs had their most successful day EVER, LINK decided there were “too many” ATMs!
Now, in 2023, the public clearly don’t agree! They still want lots of cash from lots of ATMs!
